"Representatives from five African nations are expected to attend a ceremony on Thursday marking the landing site of more than a dozen Africans in 1619 on present day Fort Monroe.
The ceremony is the first of a series of events marking the anniversary. The August 1619 landing of a Dutch ship carrying "20 and odd" Africans who were traded for provisions and supplies was the first documented landing of indentured or enslaved Africans in English-occupied North America."
